Causas de distócias em ovelhas

Abstract

Dystocia is a common problem found in sheep farms for meat purposes, and is usually associated with pain and suffering to the dam and fetus(es), allied with economic loss to the farmer. Veterinary intervention is required for correction and prevention of this problem. The aims of the study were to identify the main causes of dystocia, identify individual and management risk factors for its occurrence, relate causes of dystocia with number of fetuses, stillborns, interventions performed and maternal survival, and related the interventions performed with stilborn and maternal survival, in order to inform and guarnish the clinicians with the scientific evidence behind the cases they commonly deal with. Data on parity, cause of dystocia, number of fetuses, interventions performed, outcome of intervention, maternal survival and dam breed were analysed. The main cause of dystocia was incorrect fetal presentation, more commonly observed in multiple pregnancies, followed by ringwomb in single pregnancies. Cesarian section was associated with a higher percentage of fetuses and dams alive, while cervix manipulation and dilation was associated with lower survival results.
