Abstract

Shift work is responsible for changing the normal biological rhythms, leading the organism to constant adaptation efforts that influence a person’s health, the circadian cycle, and their personal, social and family life. Since most respondents operate on this work regime, the implications are more pronounced. This study examined the influence of shift work, particularly the night shift, in everyday life in the Secil universe in Portugal. To this end, 116 respondents, predominantly male, answered a questionnaire about sleep, health, personal, social and family life. The results indicated an impairment of the quality of sleep, especially accentuated when is shorter than seven hours; additionally, insufficient sleep increases fatigue. The personal, social and family lives are also significantly impaired, and there are professional groups more prone to the night shift work. The appetite, weight and disease or injury are not influenced by the shiftwork and these workers are able to enjoy more of the free times. It is believed that employees with higher academic level will soon be recognized, since the tendency for these workers to night shiftwork is practically nonexistent. It is recommended an intervention in the prevention and the implementation of strategies that aim to improve the life quality, well-being and, consequently, the capacity for work for these workers.
