Leishmaniose canina

Authors: Fernandes, Micaela Roque;

Leishmaniose canina

Abstract

Canine leishmaniasis (LCan) is a zoonosis caused by the protozoan Leishmania infantum and transmitted by a insect phlebotomine (P. perniciosus and P.ariasi), the canine being the main reservoir host. The objective of this study was to characterize canines with LCan in region of Torres Vedras in relation to sex, age, race, lifestyle and prophylaxis, with the clinical data of HVMSI, collected during 1 de Setembro de 2016 e 1 de Março de 2017. Information on clinical signs, laboratory abnormalities, diagnostic methods, sample ratio quantification of diagnosis and control, type of treatment implemented and mortality of affected animals were also collected. The affected animals corresponded mainly to male (60%), medium to large (90%), predominantly from outdoor (90%). The diagnosis was made mostly between 4 and 8 years old (75%), with the animals presenting at the time non-specific clinical manifestations, of which the dermatological signs (75%) were outstanding. The diagnostic medium used was the Speed Leish K and ELISA Leiscan serology test. It is concluded that its prevention is fundamental, through the awareness of the owners, carried out by the Veterinary Doctors.
