This essay examines bodily representation and the challenging of its limits under the scrutiny of a predominantly visual society. Relying on the writings of Michel Foucault (namely on his concept of “docile bodies”) and on the concept of a lived body developed by Merleau-Ponty, this text considers the ways in which the body as a social construct interacts with its environment while it questions the possibility of defining a stable and fixed body. Schools are a privileged space for researching normative and stereotypical representations of the body as well as for analyzing the consequences of a social standardization of idealized bodies.
