Abstract

Fetal or neonatal death is a life event that creates suffering and is traumatic for men, having impact on couple communication. This study was overall objectives to study the impact of fetal or neonatal death in men and the communication about the loss according to the perception of companions. The study comprised 46 women who completed an evaluation protocol composed of sociodemographic and clinical data sheet, Perinatal Grief Scale, Impact of Event Scale – Revised, Relationship Assessment Scale and Affective Style Questionnaire. It was found that most men had no clinically significant reactions of grief and trauma; increasing the mourning symptoms associated with an increased trauma symptomatology; the time elapsed since the loss is negatively associated with all variables of communication, except the satisfaction; increased symptoms of active grief (bereavement) and intrusion (trauma) was associated with increased all the variables of communication. The death of a baby is both a loss and a traumatic event that power problems at the level of communication and as such it is necessary to help men develop strategies to express themselves emotionally over the loss also fostering problem-solving strategies.
