Abstract

De acordo com Faivre, as tradições esotéricas do Ocidente têm as suas origens em diferentes formas de filosofia helénica, em particular o Gnosticismo, Hermetismo e Neoplatonismo, os quais por sua vez deixaram traços vitais nas três religiões abraâmicas . Estas correntes e as suas ciências tradicionais (alquimia, magia e astrologia) chegaram ao mundo ocidental medieval através das culturas Islâmica e Bizantina. Gilles Quispel releva a importância da gnose, sugerindo que a cultura Ocidental assenta fundamentalmente em três pilares: Racionalidade, Fé e Gnose. Efectivamente, numa perspectiva puramente histórica, encontramos na Antiguidade e período medieval, as raízes do esoterismo ocidental no cristianismo gnóstico, no hermetismo, e nas correntes neoplatónicas, de onde decorrem diversas correntes assimiladas posteriormente durante o Renascimento. O eixo temático deste painel/simpósio será portanto a Gnose, permitindo um maior aprofundamento dos diversos sistemas e correntes e seus conceitos teológicos, cosmológicos, antropológicos, soteriológicos.
