Abstract

The human microbiome refers to a large community of microorganisms which occupy several places of the human body and play a key role in health and diseases. The human microbiome project was created to achieve knowledge about all microorganisms that exist in our body with an ultimate goal to easily prevent and treat diseases. Oral cavity’s microbiome is a large number of bacterial species, but also fungal species. The human mouth is constituted by several structures such as teeth, lips, gums, and each one has its own microbiome since they have different environments, which leads to a different growth of microorganisms. The oral microbiome takes an important role in individual’s health, once a little change occurs it can lead to many pathological conditions. To prevent diseases such as periodontitis, caries or even cardiac and respiratory diseases it is necessary that oral microbiome is in healthy equilibrium with the host. That is, oral hygiene is essential for maintaining a balanced oral microbiome, as well as reducing sugar intake and a balanced diet in order to keep the immune system intact.
