A cor e os ornatos na arquitectura vernacular da era colonial: Olinda

Abstract

A presente dissertação tem como principal objectivo a percepção da real dimensão das dinâmicas cromáticas e ornamentais impostas a uma arquitectura popular da era colonial portuguesa. A exaltação da cor, consequente de um movimento artístico herdado na cidade de Olinda, estado de Pernambuco, Brasil, atraiu-me escolhê-la como objecto de estudo. Na contemporaneidade a cor é um elemento em constante mutação, ao gosto e vontade de cada um, impressa na arquitectura popular como representação identitária do modo de ser e de estar dos seus habitantes. Considerou-se importante abordar a arquitectura reconhecida como de matriz portuguesa que lhe esteve na origem, a qual foi preciso estudar, assim como os povos que habitaram e povoaram o nosso território e que legados nos deixaram. Portugal constitui-se nação, definiu suas fronteiras e logo se assumiu como império colonizador, conquistando terras longínquas, chegou ao Brasil no séc. XV, depois de já ter conquistado ilhas atlânticas, terras africanas e asiáticas. Importa contextualizar os diferentes períodos históricos ao longo de cinco séculos, desde a data do assentamento de Olinda em 1535: o sítio escolhido, o nome, a condição geográfica, o traçado urbano, a sua evolução morfológica, o tipo de ocupação, a mescla humana, as diferentes culturas e religiosidades. Olinda foi centro de poder político e religioso da colónia, cresceu miscigenada com indígenas, portugueses, africanos e outros. Conheceu a glória e a destruição, reconstitui-se, evoluiu alternando épocas de apogeu e adversidades. Olinda mereceu em 1982 o reconhecimento da UNESCO de Património Histórico e Cultural da Humanidade, título que alimentou o ego dos seus habitantes e incentivou ainda mais a preservação e a conservação do património arquitectónico, destacando-o como símbolo principal da sua identidade. A abordagem ao sítio histórico de Olinda pretende atestar que a exaltação da cor estampada na arquitectura popular de matriz portuguesa do período colonial (tradicionalmente com uma base branca), não afecta a sua identidade, sendo um elemento muito mais carregado de características identitárias, de forte presença na memória colectiva da cidade. O ornato tipicamente herdado da nossa arquitectura tradicional e o movimento cromático, conferem um aroma tropical (afro-brasileiro) à portugalidade de Olinda, confirmada pelas instituições religiosas e pela língua.

This research has the aim the understanding of the real dimension of chromatic and ornamental dynamics imposed on a popular architecture of the portuguese colonial era. To emphasize the color is a consequent of an art movement in the city of Olinda (Pernambuco, Brazil) that attracted me to choose it like an object of case. Actually, the color is an element in constant mutation, as one desires, printed in popular architecture such an identity representation of the way of life of its habitants. It is important to approach the recognize of the portuguese vernacular architecture and its origins, who were the people that lived in our territory and which legacy they left to us. Portugal has formed nation, defined its boundaries, and soon has been transformed as a colonial empire, conquering distant lands. Arrived at Brazil in the 15th century after conquested the Atlantic islands and some African and Asian colonies. It matters contextualize the different historical periods over five centuries, from the date of settlement in Olinda in 1535; the place, the name, the geographic condition, the urban layout, its morphological evolution, the type of occupation, the human mixture and the different cultures and religions. Olinda was the center of political and religious power of the colony and grew in a miscellanious of indians, Portuguese and Africans. Olinda knew several days of glory and destruction, recovered itself with alternating periods of glory and adversities. In 1982 Olinda received UNESCO recognition of Historical and Cultural Heritage of Humanity, title that fed the ego of its habitants and encouraged even more the preservation and conservation of the architectural heritage, highlighting the main symbol of their identity. The approach to the historic site of Olinda aims to testify that the exaltation of color over the matrix of the portuguese colonial architecture (traditionally white), doesn´t affect its identity, being an identity element much heavier of identity characteristics and strong presence in the collective city memory. The ornament typically herited from our traditional architecture and the chromatic movement, give a tropical flavour (afro-brazilian) to Olinda’s portugality, confirmed by religious institutions and language.
