Abstract

Osteocondrosis is an orthopedic pathology of development, and has important and visible repercussions in the equine industry. It is a multifactorial disease which results from the failure of normal endochondral ossification of the metaphysis growth plate and/or the articular-epiphysis complex. The objective of this study was to analyze the prevalence of osteocondrosis in the tarsocrural joint in two distinct breeds: the Lusitanian (Portuguese) Thoroughbred and the Spanish Thoroughbred. 326 horses were used, out of which 150 were Lusitanian Thoroughbreds and 176 were Spanish Thoroughbreds. All of the horses were submitted to various x-rays of the tarsocrural joint: lateral-medial, dorsomedial-plantar lateral, dorsolateral-plantar medial, and dorsal-plantar. Of the 326 studied horses, 31 showed osteochondritic lesions that could be seen radiographically. Of these, 24 were Spanish horses and 7 were Lusitanian, which translates to a 9.5% prevalence rate (13.7% in Spanish Thoroughbreds and 4.7% in Lusitanian Thoroughbreds). To add to the prevalence, the study also analyzed which anatomical structures were most affected within the joint, as well as gold standard radiologic projections used to diagnose this disease. The study highlights the importance of osteochondrosis in both aforementioned breeds, which although distinct have a common origin and are genetically, morphologically and functionally similar. The results call to attention the need for implementing screening for osteochondrosis for breeders. Because of the results, genealogic book regulatory entities should take this disease into account in a more present and serious way.
