Abstract

This study has had the purpose of analyzing the relationship between school performance and practice of extracurricular sports activities among students at a secondary school in the Algarve region. The associations of these variables in relation to gender, area of study attended and the academic degree of their parents have also been examined. The sample has included 340 students of both genders attending 10th, 11th and 12th grades. The instrument used was a questionnaire (Marques, 2010). The statistical analysis has included descriptive and inferential analysis in order to find significant associations between the variables under study and aims to explain the nature of these relationships. The results have shown the lack of significant differences between students who practice extracurricular sports activities and those who do not practice them at the level of academic performance. Accordingly, other variables such as time devoted to study, academic degree of parents and area of study attended have also been analyzed.
