Abstract

Efusões são condições patológicas ocasionalmente encontradas no dia-a-dia de clínicas e hospitais de pequenos animais e correspondem a uma excessiva e anormal acumulação de líquido numa cavidade, seja ela, torácica/pleural, pericárdica, abdominal/peritoneal ou articular. O objetivo deste trabalho foi a determinação da existência de alguma relação entre os parâmetros bioquímicos dos líquidos de derrame com os perfis bioquímicos sanguíneos, determinando-se também a possível existência de fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento de derrames. Para isso, foi estudada retrospetivamente uma população de 324 animais (canídeos e felídeos) através de registos de análises efetuadas no laboratório DNAtech entre 1 de Janeiro de 2012 e 31 de Junho de 2013. Concluiu-se que não aparenta existir fatores de risco associados aos derrames cavitários e que alguns parâmetros bioquímicos sanguíneos tiveram relação direta com o tipo de derrame desenvolvido. Observou-se uma maior prevalência de derrames em raças indefinidas em gatos e puras em cães e em animais com mais de sete anos de idade, sendo as causas neoplásicas as principais no seu desenvolvimento. Em cães observaram-se mais derrames peritoneais, enquanto que em gatos os mais prevalentes foram os pleurais. Também se notou que grande parte dos animais morrem ou acabam eutanasiados até uma semana após a deteção do derrame.

Effusions are pathological conditions occasionally encountered in daily clinical and hospital routine. They correspond to an excessive and abnormal accumulation of fluid in a cavity, either, thoracic/pleural, pericardial, abdominal/peritoneal or joint. The aim of this study was to determine the existence of any relationship between the biochemical parameters of effusions and hematological biochemical profiles and to determine the possible existence of risk fators for the development of effusions. For this, we retrospectively studied a population of 324 animals (canines and felines) by records of analyzes performed in the DNAtech laboratory between January 1, 2012 and June 31, 2013. We concluded that there seems to be no associated risk fators in effusions, and that some hematological biochemical parameters were directly related to the type of liquid developed. There was a higher prevalence of effusions in mongrels cats and pure race dogs and senior animals and there were encountered more neoplastic causes in their development. We observed more peritoneal effusions in dogs and pleural effusions in cats. It was also noticed that many of the animals end up euthanized or died within a week after the detection of the effusion.
