Abstract

The republican myth and the new republican citizen in Portugal was a project based on the idea of identity, which led to a reconstitution of the history and of the Portuguese tradition. This aspiration emerged in line with what was the Republic of France, but especially and in an subjacent way, in the line of the primordial myths and ritualized in the utopian way of an ideal Republic. The new Portuguese identity, within the republican model, was skilfully drafted by a united group of intellectuals and politicians. This group was truly convinced about the scientific approach of the project that would change the Portuguese decadent society. The identity was established in the memory, in the affections, in the education, in the times, in the spaces and in the rites… The identity merged with the regime that acted as heir of the glorious and mystified past, and at the same time, as a direct representative of the present and the promising future of Portugal. The republican ideal developed within the society an identity that embodied itself in the civic rituality.
