Abstract

The sedentary lifestyle has been growing in developed societies, constituting a negative factor in promoting population’s life quality. With that being said, school, and in particular Physical Education, should promote population’s physical activity habits in order to strike against this negative tendency. Furthermore, Physical Education should provide the students with motivational conditions for them to acquire competence and passion for physical activity. This study aims to understand the predominant motivational climate in Physical Education class, regarding the comparison between students of female intern teachers and students of male intern teachers. Besides, this study will also focus in understanding these students life style as well as their attitudes concerning school and physical activity. This investigation was executed based on a quantitative study, using a questionnaire (Papaiouannou et al, 2007, adapted and validated by Martins and Carreiro da Costa). The sample consists of 333 individuals (N=333), with ages between 11 and 18 years old (M=14.35, DP=1.14), attending the 3rd cycle of basic education in Lisbon and Tejo’s Valley. From the results obtained, considering the entire sample, and referring to the objectives orientation and motivational climate, they were mostly oriented to mastery, followed by performance approach and at last to performance avoidance. The results of the male teacher group were superior in each and every dimension of the questionnaire, and although there is no significant statistical difference, the variable that was most distinguished between the two groups was the motivational climate - performance approach
