Estudo sobre caquexia em leitões de recria

Abstract

Cachexia is a complex metabolic syndrome characterized by loss of muscle mass and body fat, leading to economic unfeasibility of affected animals. This study aimed to determine the mortality rate associated with cachexia in piglets, characterization of the associated gross lesions and determine whether those allow the establishment of the underlying cause. The study took place in a farm in Sesimbra, with 7054 piglets. A pre-defined clinical criteria to determine cachexia as well as the classification of the necropsy findings were used as a method of evaluation of cachexia in this study. The mortality rate associated to cachexia was 1%, while the proportional mortality rate of cachexia was 62%. Of the 48 piglets, 25 had enteritis, 8 bronchopneumonia, 6 polyserositis (Glasser's disease), 3 pulmonary embolisms and 1 congenital heart disease. Five piglets didn’t present macroscopic lesions which raised the possibility of having PFTS. It was concluded that the necropsy could not determine the definitive aetiology of cachexia, nevertheless it can direct the clinical reasoning and diagnostic exams that can establish a definitive diagnosis.
