Abstract

The growing interest for a healthy lifestyle and a balanced diet have been the basis for a general health improvement in society and enhanced quality of life. This motivation, increasingly present among the population, has led to a growing interest for nutritional supplements where herbal supplements are included. Medicinal plants have been used for thousands of years due to their beneficial properties and, consequently, seen as products of extremely good quality, high safety standards and limited side effects. However, the low incidence of side effects in these products does not always correspond to reality. Thus, it is up to the health professionals, notably the pharmacists, to properly advise their patients in the acquisition of these products, since this has the skills to enable it to provide adequate patient advice, which aims to weigh the benefits verses the potential adverse effects of these supplements. Consequently, pharmacists play a critical role in assessing the potential benefits and likely adverse effects of these supplements when advising patients based on their clinic condition. The high price of the nutricional supplements compared with medicines that are reimbursed (whitch was not the case for example, in the U.S.A), and even the hard economic situation prevailing in Portugal, has made the purchase of these severely affected. Nutritional supplement is not considered to be an essential product, evidence show that those are primarily sought when symptoms have already occurred or when directly recommended by a doctor. Thus, a thorough analysis of the whole Portuguese economic environment encompassing the nutritional herbal supplements has been conducted while assessing the overall market potential for these products. As a result, it was possible to draw the necessary conclusions regarding the attractiveness for companies to enter in the nutritional supplements market while further analysing the direct benefits consumers have by purchasing these type of products.
