From the 19th century onwards, Marian apparitions took on a new symbolic order, more associated with strengthening the faith as a doctrine.Perhaps this is why the figure of Mary, in this phase of late Modernity, is generally linked to the great apparitions and their messages, in connection with the social and mental climate of these last two centuries, taking into account the context marked by enlightenment, rationalism, anti-clericalism and the secularization of societies.

A partir do século XIX as aparições marianas assumiram uma nova ordem simbólica, mais associada ao reforço da fé enquanto doutrina. Talvez por isso a figura de Maria, nesta fase da Modernidade tardia, surge geralmente ligada às grandes aparições e respectivas mensagens, em ligação com o clima social e mental destes dois últimos séculos, tendo em conta o contexto marcado pelo iluminismo, o racionalismo, o anticlericalismo, e a secularização das sociedades.
