Abstract

Splenectomy is a surgery that consists of partial or total removal of the spleen and is currently considered a routine surgery in Veterinary Medicine. With the evolution of veterinary medicine, as well as the appreciation of companion animals by owners, it was necessary to innovate and create new surgical techniques and materials. The canine species is the most affected by pathologies associated with the spleen, of which 50% are oncological pathologies, namely hemangiosarcomas. This kind of surgery can be carried out as an emergency for reasons of trauma and/or internal bleeding, for example, but also to assist in the treatment of some pathologies. The aim of this report, was to prepare a general review of the organ in question, the spleen, as well as the associated pathologies, giving greater importance to the different surgical techniques described to perform a splenectomy. This work presents four clinical cases of canines with different breeds, ages, and sexes that underwent total splenectomy and presented non-specific symptoms. Patients were monitored throughout the process, from admission, complementary exams, anesthesia, surgery, recovery, and recovery at home. Through this work, it was possible to highlight the importance of splenectomy in spleen pathologies, but also the advantages and disadvantages of the different surgical techniques and materials used, as well as a review of possible treatments for oncological pathologies.
