Abstract

Intimate partner violence is a devastating and pervasive issue worldwide. It is known that psychopathy can be a risk factor for perpetrating acts of violence, but the literature on intimate partner violence is less consistent. Examining and defining the psychological factors that contribute to the perpetration of violence, specifically intimate partner violence, may help enhance the understanding of the sources that generate violent behavior. Thus, this study aims to understand the relationship between psychopathy and the perpetration of IPV and how premeditation may affect this relationship. It is important to note that psychopathy is defined as a personality disorder, serving as a significant predictor of antisocial behavior. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 342 participants (n=270 women) aged between 18 and 73 years. To explore differences between perpetrators and non-perpetrators of IPV, independent sample t-tests were employed to identify significant distinctions. Mediation effects were then analyzed based on the results obtained. The results obtained from preliminary analyses demonstrate that psychopathy is associated with the perpetration of IPV. These findings are consistent with other studies that have examined this same association. Keywords: aggression, intimate, relationships, violence, psychopathy
