Abstract

The result of the investigation is that conflict in the marital subsystem is a central theme of research on family relationships, given its impact on the psychological functioning of children and other family subsystems. However, no study has tested the association between different types of marital conflict resolution and different types of coparental conflict resolution strategies. The present study had three objectives. The first was to identify working typologies for marital conflict resolution through cluster analysis procedures. The second objective was to test whether the marital conflict resolution clusters differed from each other in sociodemographic and relational variables, and, finally, the third objective was to test whether the clusters differed from each other in terms of open and covered coparental conflict and at the level of the perception of justice on the division of child care tasks. The sample consisted of 272 mothers residing in Portugal, aged between 20 and 51 years old, with children aged between 2 and 6 years old. Using a cross-sectional design, an online data collection survey was conducted in which participants answered questions regarding the variables under study. The results showed four types/profiles. It was also possible to observe that the profiles differed from each other in terms of marital satisfaction, sexual satisfaction and risk of divorce, as well as being distinguished from each other both at the level of open coparental conflict, at the level of covered coparental conflict (coparental sabotage) and or at the level of the perception of justice on the division of child care talks. The limitations and implications for the Psychology of Justice practice of the present study will also be discussed.
