Populismo religioso : entre modernofobia, islamofobia e secularismo cristão

Abstract

Este artigo investiga as origens do populismo religioso, articulando-as com o advento do secularismo e com a ideia de privatização da religião. Através duma metodologia descritivo-analítica, examinar-se-á o modo como, contrariamente às teorias da secularização, se deu a desprivatização do religioso e como, consequentemente, se aprofundou a politização deste discurso. É com o desenvolvimento e aprofundamento da politização da religião que o populismo religioso começa a penetrar o e a ganhar preponderância no espaço público, assumindo uma influência gradualmente mais relevante no discurso político hodierno e na compreensão que os indivíduos fazem de si mesmos e dos outros. Esta pesquisa está centrada, geograficamente, no Atlântico Norte (vulgo Ocidente) e no Médio Oriente, porquanto esta dicotomia regional permite isolar três subtipos de populismo religioso – modernofobia, islamofobia e secularismo cristão – que são submarcas contemporâneas indeléveis deste fenómeno.
