Abstract

Scientifically proven, the beneficial effects of cannabinoids present in the seeds of hemp plant, translates into an increase in demand for this plant for the CBD (cannabidiol) industry. In this industry, hemp fibers are considered waste and are being sent to landfills and incineration, thus breaking the organic matter cycle and generating unnecessary environmental impacts. Hemp fibers are of exceptional quality and are being used in the production of textiles and paper and are being incorporated into product matrices in various industries. The objective of this work is to analyze the effectiveness of the vermicomposting technique for treatment of hemp residues. The experimental part lasted 160 days where a vermicomposting system was built using Eisenia fetida earthworms fed with hemp residues and biodegradable organic residues. The results of the analysis of the produced vermicompost show a negative linear relationship between the amount of hemp and pH value, organic matter and electrical conductivity and a positive linear relationship between the amount of hemp and the moisture content and coarse fraction of the vermicompost, revealing an incomplete biodegradation. The conclusions allow us to infer that although the complete biodegradation of hemp residues was not verified, it is to be expected that the addition of materials rich in microorganisms (e.g., leachate, WWTP sludge) will allow a greater efficiency of the intended biodegradation.
