A sintaxe espacial e o desenho do espaço público

Abstract

The different approaches assessing the physical form of urban areas are distinguished by their theories, concepts and methodologies. Space syntax, as a theory of space and society, was introduced in the end of the 1970s and has been developing throughout the recent years. It represents a new theory about architecture and cities, and it focuses on space itself, as a tool for analyzing and studying the urban form. The purpose of this study is to analyze a specific urban space, as an element of a spatial configuration, in order to evaluate its morphology and to propose an urban design scheme. Nowadays, contemporary urban design meets multiple challenges. The requirement to reduce the risks of failure and to answer to the current requirements of our time demand new solutions of urban design evidence based. This study shows the potential of an analytical approach on the making of an urban design project. The study focuses on the city of Oporto, where space syntax was applied, in a local and global context, as an analytical method to study the city and a public space. Thus, space syntax theory and methodology will be present in the first part. In the second part, the methodology will be applied to the Oporto city, in a global context, and to small plaza named Largo Actor Dias, in a local context.
