A literacia em saúde

Abstract

Health literacy is ever more necessary in the current socioeconomic framing. The author, in her professional practice, realises that patients have to make more and more difficult decisions in health, but most of them have difficulties in reading and understanding even simple medical information. The purpose of this study is to know the level of health literacy of patients in the radiology service of a Portuguese hospital. Bibliographical research of the main concepts was made, after which the goals of the empirical study were devised by carrying out an inquiry on health literacy. Based on the exploratory and descriptive methodology, the subject was studied. The main conclusion is the deficit of academic qualifications of the studied population, reflecting their poor health literacy, which in turn affects the level of treatment efficiency.
