Abstract

Antibiotic resistance has been a major concern. The need for the discovery of new antibiotics is increasing. Natural products are seen as viable alternatives to solving this problem. The genus Plectranthus, belonging to the family Laminaceae, has antimicrobial properties widely described in the literature. His bactericidal action is due to metabolites, namely diterpenes. Nanotechnology is a very promising field. Metal nanoparticles, especially silver nanoparticles, have a large surface to volume ratio, which gives them the ability to interact with bacterial membranes. Functionalization of silver nanoparticles with 7α-acetoxy-6B-hydroxyroyleanone demonstrates the feasibility of developing a formulation with antibacterial properties.
