Engraving as a visual source was crucial in the construction of the imagery that characterized the Baroque period, including Portugal. An imagery phenomena not only appealed to the pictorial reproduction of episodes of the life of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Saints, but adopted other forms, more directed to the individual dimension of the believer, in a direct appeal to the conversion of his/her heart. In the context of the Portuguese Baroque, a Theology of the Heart quickly developed in painting, inspired by books of emblems, a visual language centered on the existence of the homo interior, its conversion and the salvation of the soul.
