Se presenta un breve recorrido del mapa cultural étnico en Sonora y una reflexión sobre la influencia hereditaria de los pueblos originarios en su territorio. El desierto de Sonora se sitúa al noroeste de México, limitado al norte con los Estados Unidos, al sur con Sinaloa, al este con Chihuahua y al oeste con el Golfo de California o Mar de Cortés. Su población indígena se constituye por ocho grupos: mayo, yaqui, pima, guarijío, seri, pápago, cucapá, kikapoo. Considerando la frontera con Estados Unidos, varios de ellos tienen carácter social binacional. Por su ubicación geográfica los podemos dividir en tres grupos: pueblos de la sierra, del desierto y del valle.
