Distribución y ocupación del espacio. Las estructuras de los asentamientos en el área cultural tairona y su relación con el medio natural.

Abstract

Las soluciones y estrategias de adaptación al entorno que hallamos entre los pueblos nativos americanos en la construcción de su há- bitat, son diversas y creativas. En el caso de territorios montañosos, los asentamientos indígenas solían estar ubicados en las alturas, en lugares despejados y aun abruptos, donde se pudiera asegurar el correcto drenaje de las aguas de lluvia, al resguardo de los vientos, la defensa ante posibles enemigos, etcétera. En el caso de los pueblos que ocuparon la Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta en Colombia, éstos optaron por situar sus asentamientos en las cuencas altas de ríos y quebradas, y su capacidad de transformar el paisaje les permitió la construcción de cientos de muros y terrazas distribuidos en más de 250 emplazamientos, la mayoría de los cuales estaban conectados por importantes redes de comunicación, constituyendo un sistema espacial jerarquizado de asentamientos principales o cabeceras, y núcleos medianos y pequeños de viviendas, los cuales conforman en su conjunto una elaborada estructura espacial instalada en un medio natural rico en recursos naturales.
