Culto imperial en Hispania: el poder divino del emperador en Tarraco

Abstract

El culto imperial es una cuestión compleja que ha sido tratada y estudiada por la historiografía tradicional ubicándola siempre en el ámbito de lo puramente político y dejando de lado la vertiente religiosa del acontecimiento. Según esta visión, el culto imperial no es más que un acto de hipocresía política sin ninguna connotación religiosa. No obstante, surge nuestro trabajo precisamente desde un paradigma diferente, que se comenzó a vislumbrar en los estudios de Hopkins y Price, quienes situaron por vez primera el culto imperial dentro de la religión romana. Es por ello, desde el prisma de la Historia de las Religiones, donde nuestro estudio encuentra sentido. Así pues, comenzamos realizando una aproximación teórica en torno al culto imperial para luego estudiar el caso concreto de la ciudad de Tarraco. Aquí tenemos evidencias suficientes que nos indican que quizás el culto imperial no era, tal como se ha venido planteando, un elemento político directamente vinculado a la grandeza e importancia de la ciudad, sino más bien un elemento religioso flexible que se practicaba en un amplio abanico de lugares en forma de verdadera devoción.
