Abstract

O retrato pintado ainda em vida de Santa Teresa de Jesus espelha, nas expressões que Frei Juan de la Miseria teve o cuidado de retratar, o seu lado mais autêntico. Como reformadora da Regra carmelita e fundadora da Ordem das Carmelitas Descalças surgira a necessidade de retratar a sua figura seguindo as novas regras estabelecidas e saídas do Concílio de Trento, durante a centúria de Quinhentos. A sua áurea de santidade foi, depois, amplamente difundida graças à acção de religiosos que com ela conviveram e através de gravadores, pintores e escultores que se inspiraram largamente tanto no seu retrato como nas suas obras escritas e histórias que eram divulgadas um pouco por toda a Europa. Também os revestimentos em azulejo foram eleitos para disseminar a sua mensagem, em particular, no interior de espaços religiosos masculinos e femininos e, em paredes de igrejas frequentadas por religiosos e pelo povo. O revestimento parietal em azulejo reflectiu-se, também, nos cenóbios carmelitas descalços que durante os séculos XVII e XVIII foram surgindo em território brasileiro. A ordem religiosa chegara ao Brasil, concretamente à Bahia, em 1665, mas e apesar da sua presença neste território em expansão, o revestimento azulejar dos seus espaços conventuais teve de ser encomendado às oficinas da metrópole portuguesa.
