Abstract

Si no hay de todo, para todos, gratis; si más es mejor que menos; y si con los recursos productivos se puede hacer más de una cosa, entonces la eficiencia es importantísima. ¿Por qué, entonces, observamos tanta ineficiencia en la realidad? Respuestas posibles: porque los economistas estamos equivocados; porque estamos en lo correcto, pero no nos sabemos explicar; porque estamos en lo correcto, pero que el mensaje le llegue a los decisores toma tiempo; porque la eficiencia colisiona con, por ejemplo, la distribución desde el punto de vista de las decisiones públicas, dado que éstas se basan en beneficios y costos políticos, y no en beneficios y costos económicos; etc. Echar luz sobre esta cuestión es el objetivo del presente trabajo. Difícilmente algo de lo que se afirma aquí resulte novedoso; si hay algún mérito, consiste en ocuparse de un tópico muy relevante, que la profesión -y el público en general- deberían tener más claro.
