We questioned 240 headmasters about their expectations and aspirations towards their teacher colleagues. A cluster analysis revealed the existence of two different groups of head masters: Those primarily oriented to school administration and school regulation (group I) and those more focussed on pedagogical-educational issues (group II). Persons allocated to group I show larger discrepancies between their expectations/ aspirations and the perceived fulfilment of these. They feel that they invest more personal effort than their teacher colleagues and that their colleagues' expectations towards them are unjustified. They are also clearly less satisfied than headmasters in group II. The data are interpreted in the light of the principle of reciprocity in social exchange.
