Abstract

En el presente artículo estudiamos los efectos de los cambios en la distribución del ingreso sobre los costos comparativos y mostramos que la presencia de bienes de capital afecta dramáticamente la posibilidad de construir una «cadena de ventajas comparativas» que permita explicar la dirección del comercio internacional. En particular, mostramos que i) los costos comparativos de autarquía son malos predictores del patrón de especialización debido a que, bajo la presencia de bienes de capital importados, los costos no varían proporcionalmente con la tasa de salarios relativos.; ii) para asegurar que “un único corte en la cadena” permite separar las mercancías exportadas e importadas, a lo sumo un único bien puede ser utilizado como insumo intermedio y que, cuando el capital se compone de bienes heterogéneos, la cadena de ventajas comparativas puede ni siquiera estar bien definida. iii) Mostramos también que cambios en la tasa de beneficios puede alterar el ordenamiento de los eslabones de la cadena, incluso bajo condiciones en que la cadena se encuentra bien definida para una tasa de ganancia constante (e.g. nula); y, adicionalmente, iv que) la plausibilidad de que la cadena de ventajas comparativas requiera múltiples eslabones para la misma industria aumenta con el valor de la tasa de ganancia.
