Ausgehend von etymologischen Bedeutungen des Wohnens wird der Idealtypus des Wohnens anhand von fünf sozialhistorischen Entwicklungssträngen charakterisiert. Grundlegende Prozesse der postmodernen Transformation der Lebensverhältnisse werden in ihrer Relevanz für das Wohnen heutzutage interpretiert. Reurbanisierung und Multilokalität als zentrale Einflussfaktoren auf das städtische Wohnen werden vertiefend erläutert.
