Efecto de la tasa de cambio real en la balanza por cuenta corriente en países con distintos niveles de desarrollo

Abstract

El objetivo de esta investigación es examinar empíricamente la relación entre la balanza por cuenta corriente y la tasa de cambio real para economías con distinto niveles de desarrollo. Utilizamos datos de series de tiempo anuales del período 1980-2015 provenientes de los Indicadores de Desarrollo (2017) del Banco Mundial para Ecuador, Chile y Alemania. La selección de la muestra de países permite comparar los resultados entre países con diferencias significativas en el nivel de desarrollo económico. Usando técnicas de cointegración y de corrección de error, encontramos evidencia empírica robusta que sugiere que la condición de Marshall-Lerner no se cumple para la muestra de países y existe equilibrio de corto plano pero no en el largo plazo, a excepción de Ecuador, un país sin soberanía monetaria. Una implicación de política económica derivada de esta investigación, es que el déficit puede ser cubierto por los aumentos en las cuentas de capital y financiera utilizando los activos de reserva para equilibrar las cuentas. Sin embargo, dicha situación no es sostenible de forma indefinida porque los activos de reserva se agotarían y al final, el tipo de cambio real tendría que ser depreciado
