Abstract

Gesundheit wird oft als das "höchste Gut" im Leben eines Menschen bezeichnet. Nach Definition der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO) bedeutet Gesundheit nicht allein "die Abwesenheit von Krankheit", sondern bezeichnet "einen Zustand vollständigen körperlichen, geistigen und sozialen Wohlergehens". Physische und psychische Gesundheit ist ferner die Voraussetzung dafür, viele Aktivitäten des Lebens überhaupt ausüben zu können. Der Gesundheitszustand beeinflusst dabei nicht nur das individuelle Wohlbefinden und die Lebensqualität, sondern wirkt sich über höhere Produktivität und geringere Ausfallzeiten auch volkswirtschaftlich positiv auf Einkommen und Wohlfahrt aus. Insbesondere in ärmeren Ländern stellt Gesundheit eine der zentralen Determinanten der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung dar.
