Leptospirose

Uma doença endémica em São Miguel
Authors: Medeiros, Regina Saudade;
Abstract

Leptospirosis is a zoonosis with a worldwide distribution caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Main reservoirs are rodents, and other mammals (such as swine and cattle) and may excrete this agent through the urine for months or years. This is a reemergent disease, being an important Public Health issue in São Miguel-Azores where it’s an endemic disease. Certain professional, socioeconomic and environmental contexts favor endemicity of the disease, facilitating the exposure to disease. In recent years, high number of human cases with fatal outcome has increased the interest in early identification of risk factors and potential sources of infection, emphasizing the importance of their recognition and prevention of disease transmission. This work consists of a systematic review of literature on leptospirosis, focusing the disease in São Miguel, epidemiological data, particularities of the disease, most common species and risk factors that justify its endemicity.
