Abstract

This report is part of the ''Internship'' curricular unit of the Integrated Masters Degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences and is divided into three chapters. The first refers to the research aspect, the second to the experience in Hospital Pharmacy, and the third to the experience in Community Pharmacy. Chapter I consists of a presentation and analysis of the panorama of intoxications in Portugal, with a special focus on drug intoxications, since they are present in most situations. Data were collected by telephone consultations of the Centro de Informação Antivenenos, from Portugal from 2014 to 2018, and the parameters were analyzed concerning type of consultation, type of intoxicated, characterization of intoxication, risk assessment and case follow-up. The results showed that the most common poisoning involve medications (70%) and are usually accidental in children and intentional in adults; benzodiazepines are the drugs most often found in those intoxications (34.76%). Since the pharmacist is considered to be specialist in medicinal products, his role in this context has been analyzed aiming at both preventing intoxications and promoting pharmacovigilance. In Chapter II, my experience during the internship at Hospital Pharmacy, which took place from September 3rd to October 31st, 2018, at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, in Funchal, under the supervision of Dr.ª Maria Ana Perry Vidal, is presented. This stage allowed me to contact with the hospital reality, passing through different sectors, such as management, distribution, ambulatory, radiopharmacy and production unit. In Chapter III my experience during the curricular internship in Community Pharmacy is described, which took place between November 12th, 2018 and January 18th, 2019, at Farmácia Lobos Mar, in Câmara de Lobos, under the supervision of Dr.ª Maria Fátima Abreu Gomes. This internship enabled me to contact with the public and to develop the necessary skills to carry out tasks such as receiving and storing orders, dispensing medicines and pharmaceutical products, measuring biochemical parameters and preparing manipulated drugs.
