Authors: Afonso, Vanessa Alexandra Rosa;

Algarve: Tradição Arquitectónica e Contemporaneidade

Abstract

When something changes suddenly it's unconfortable. When a city that had the appearance of being abandoned, without really being, and suddenly begins to improve, it gives us something to think, both by its dimension and everything that is inherent to it. When this change is pleasant, it makes us feel good, because who does like to live in an uninteresting city? In this way we stop to look for explanations and to understand the reason for such a change. This is precisely what happened to the city of Olhão da Restauração, a city that despite having unique regional characteristics, was careless, degraded and moodless. Due to the lack of appealing points in Olhão it was imperative that a turning point occurred at some point, starting to feel a new energy and a new environment. The narrow streets and dark alleys of this small city began to gain life and light again, the old houses spoiled by time or vacant begin to be renovated and occupied. Why this change? What it's the reason for this event to happen? Why so much sudden tourism in this city? What are these new inhabitants looking for? What moves them? So many unanswered questions and so much to understand. Everything that was said before, associated with the taste for the traditional architecture of Algarve and the curiosity to understand its characteristics, the materials, the respective locations and the reasons of certain configurations and details. Naturally, there is interest in two themes that are currently intertwined - the characteristics of the Algarve architecture, and why the arrival of tourists associated with the installation of new inhabitants. Both seem to be related and will be able to answer these questions. It was in this way and from these interests that the theme of the work presented here arose. The result of a very close relationship with this medium in question, of a genuine taste and approached in a very close, emotional and personal way.
