Abstract

A par do aumento do envelhecimento mundial, a população centenária regista um crescimento demográfico na maioria dos países desenvolvidos. Investigações relativas à população de idades extremas, permitem aprofundar o conhecimento sobre o processo de envelhecimento e os fatores que contribuem para a longevidade humana. A presente investigação insere-se no âmbito do PT100 – Estudo dos Centenários da Beira Interior, um sub-projeto do PT100 – Centenários do Porto, desenvolvido pela Unidade de Investigação e Formação sobre Adultos e Idosos do Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar da Universidade do Porto (UNIFAI-ICBAS) integrando um consórcio internacional, com a Universidade de Heidelberg (Alemanha) e a Universidade de Fordham (Estados Unidos da América). Define-se por um estudo observacional, descritivo e transversal, de abordagem quantitativa. Objetiva caracterizar a religiosidade dos centenários residentes na Beira Interior, e algumas dimensões relacionadas, como a valoração da vida e a satisfação com a vida. Participaram 105 centenários da Beira Interior, com idades compreendidas entre os 100 e os 108 anos (M=101,10; DP=1,49), sendo 91 (86,7%) sujeitos do género feminino e 14 (13,3%) do género masculino. Os dados foram recolhidos através da aplicação do protocolo de avaliação utilizado pelo PT100 – Centenários do Porto e pelo consórcio internacional. As atividades religiosas estão presentes na vida da maioria dos participantes da amostra. Presentemente, 40 (38,1%) centenários frequentam locais de culto e 80 (76,2%) rezam ou meditam, sendo esta última a atividade que mais se manteve nas suas vidas, comparativamente ao passado. Através da análise da escala VOL, os resultados sugerem que os participantes fazem uma valoração da sua vida positiva. A maioria afirma que atualmente tem uma grande vontade de viver (n=24; 22,9%), considerando a sua vida útil (n=28; 26,7%) e orientada por fortes crenças religiosas ou éticas (n=49; 46,7%). Os resultados relativos à satisfação com a vida, obtidos através da escala SWLS, apontam para uma avaliação positiva. A maioria dos centenários consideram-se satisfeitos com a vida (n=27; 25,7%), referindo que conseguiram obter aquilo que era importante na vida (n=26; 24,8%).

As the increase in global aging, centenarian population show a population growth in most developed countries. Investigations about population of extreme ages, allow to deepen knowledge about the aging process and the factors that contribute to human longevity. This research is part of PT100 – Estudo dos Centenários da Beira Interior, a PT100 – Centenários do Porto subproject, developed by the Unidade de Investigação e Formação sobre Adultos e Idosos do Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar da Universidade of Porto (UNIFAI-ICBAS) integrating an international consortium with the Heidelberg University (Germany) and Fordham University (USA). Is defined by an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. Aim characterize the religiosity of Beira Interior's centenarians and some related variables, such as the valuation of life and satisfaction with life. Participated 105 centenarians of Beira Interior, aged 100 to 108 years (M = 101,10; SD=1,49), 91 (86,7%) of female gender and 14 (13,3%) male gender. Data were collected using the assessment protocol used by PT100 – Centenários do Porto and the international consortium. Religious activities are present in the lives of most participants in the sample. At present, 40 (38,1%) centenarians attending places of worship and 80 (76,2%) pray or meditate, being the activity that more remained in their lives, compared to the past. By analyzing the VOL scale, the results suggest that participants make a positive valuation of their life. Currently, most say have a great will to live (n=24; 22,9%), considering their life usefull (n=28; 26,7%) driven by strong religious or ethical beliefs (n=49; 46,7%). The results related to life satisfaction, achieved through the SWLS scale, point to a positive evaluation. Most centenarians appear to be satisfied with life (n=27; 25,7%) indicating that they achieved what was important in life (n=26; 24,8%).
