Aplicações tradicionais e potencial bioativo de Eugenia caryophyllata: revisão bibliográfica

Abstract

Vários estudos científicos evidenciaram a bioatividade do óleo essencial, tal como a atividade antibacteriana, antifúngica, antiviral, antioxidante, anti-inflamatória, anticancerígena e anestésica.

This report is based on three areas experienced during my traineeship inserted in the Pharmaceutical Sciences Master’s degree study plan: Community and Hospital Pharmacy and Research. The first chapter is related to the research work about the essential oil (EO) extracted from the dried flower buds of Eugenia caryophyllata Thunb. and the plant itself, have been widely used for its medicinal properties for many decades. The extraction and isolation of bioactive compounds, from several extracts, have been an attractive strategy to launch chemical investigations in order to select new approaches of treatment. This review aims to provide the current state of knowledge about Eugenia caryophyllata and its essential oil, specifically regarding its pharmacological activities, traditional uses, toxicity and safety. Through the search and analyses of the assessment report provided by official Pharmacopoeias, scientific papers listed in “PubMed” and “Google Scholar” databases and also books devoted to traditional use, it was allowed to compare the traditional uses with bioactivity. Caryophylli flos and floris aetheroleum are traditionally used for the treatment of toothache, dressing of minor wounds, myalgia, insect bites, flatulent colic or nausea. The main components of the EO are eugenol, eugenyl acetate and ß-caryophyllene. Several scientific studies evidenced the essential oil bioactivity such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticarcinogenic and anaesthetic activities. Referring to safety issues, further investigations are required due to levels of toxicity and/or genotoxicity that have been reported. Eugenia caryophyllata, as an aromatic and medicinal plant, has proved pharmacological activities that support its clinical application. The second and third chapter concern the traineeship in Hospital Pharmacy and Community Pharmacy, respectively, as well as the knowledge and skills acquired during the same, that have contributed to supplement my school graduation.
