Abstract

Aging is a natural process, marking a stage of human life, and that is through physical, psychological and social changes. With advancing age are occurring structural and functional changes, which are found in all the old, typical of the normal aging process. For this it is essential to understand the degree of resilience of each elderly, how overcome these changes. Thus, variables such as the functional autonomy and control are essential to explain this process. In this study we participated in institutionalized elderly, non-institutionalized elderly, seniors who enjoy some support and seniors who do not enjoy any support. As instruments used to assess control of life, functional autonomy and resilience, we have the control scale on Life, Basic Activities of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) and resilience scale. For data collection the questionnaires was held in day centers, in a long term care facility and a University of the Third Age. As main results, it was observed, unlike many studies done that institutionalized elderly are no less autonomous than those living in their homes.
