Abstract

The stroke is a very frequent neurological syndrome in adults and the elderly, being responsible for the highest percentage of incapacity, functional dependency and deterioration of physical, cognitive, emotional and social ability of the Portuguese population. In this sense, the caregiver has a crucial role, since the patient with stroke may require assistance to perform activities related to self-care, as well as require a differentiated assistance. This study aims to analyze the overload of informal caregivers of people with stroke. Participated in the study 48 caregivers, aged between 23 and 75 years (M=49,98; SD=13,259), being 39 female and 9 male. The instruments used were Sociodemographic Questionnaire; Scale of daily life activities (Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, 1972 adapted for Portuguese population by Rodrigues, 2008); Questionnaire for evaluating the Informal Caregiver overload (Martins, Ribeiro & Garrett, 2003) and Scale of Satisfaction with Life (Diener, Emmons, Larsen & Griffin, 1985 adapted for the Portuguese population by Simões, 1992). The results highlight that the caregivers who care for more than 16 hours of the dependent person with CVA have a higher mean (M = 95.75, SD = 20.57) to the people who care less time, being these differences statistically significant (p = 0.000). It was found also that individuals with sleep problems have a medium level of overload (M = 93.29, SD = 22.46) higher than caregivers without sleep problems (M = 73.23; DP = 16.57), being these differences statistically significant (p = 0.002). The analysis of the relation between satisfaction with life and physical, emotional and social overload indicated a moderate and negative statistically significant correlation (r =-0.564; p = 0.000) between these dimensions. The results alert to the existence of possible risk factors relating to the overhead of caregivers and to your relation with life satisfaction. These results suggest the need for strategies / mechanisms for supporting informal caregivers of people with CVA.
