Arquitetura Sanatorial

Do projeto à reabilitação
Authors: Rocha, Daniela Ferreira;

Arquitetura Sanatorial

Abstract

This dissertation highlights and gives due recognition and importance to sanatorium buildings. To better understand the architectural typology, it was done a contextualization of both XIX and XX centuries and, it was concluded that it was during these periods that the necessity of acting towards a prominent disease, called Tuberculosis, emerged. This disease is the reason why sanatoriums were created, which is the main object to be analyzed throughout this dissertation. The Sanatorium Ferroviario in Penhas da Saude and the Sanatorium Sousa Martins in Guarda are historically connected and because of their architectonic importance and preponderant role throughout a certain era, they were chosen to be the object of this dissertation. After losing its main purpose, these buildings were rebuilt allowing the buildings to be used for different purposes. And, although Sanatorium Sousa Moura (work of Raul Lino) is abandoned at the present time, the Sanatorium Ferroviario (work of Cottinelli Telmo) gave rise to the Pousada Serra da Estrela (Serra da Estrela Inn), and its rehabilitation was done by Eduardo Sousa Moura.
