Abstract

The flow around the pier causes several phenomena resulting of the interaction between the flow and the obstacle. The analysis and prediction of this phenomenon is quite empiric and simply based in literature and rehearses controlled in laboratory to smaller scales. In this present research, it was considered all the existing information in literature and laboratorial experiences previously performed. However, the great difference in relation to the other investigations performed in this area is achieved through the use of new technologies, more specifically through the numerical modelling of flows through the Fluent. Therefore, eleven simulations in the Fluent were held using the Large Eddy Simulation as the model of the turbulence of the flow. The first three simulations were performed in order to validate the mesh for use in other simulations. On the other hand, the simulations with circular and square section are compared to the values that were theoretically obtained through the bibliographic revision done in this research so that the used programme can be authenticated and may transmit security in the values obtained hereafter. The remaining simulations are performed using several cross-sections of piers, in order to compare the results of the drag forces among them and see the sections that are better adaptable to the turbulent flows. The set of these simulations allowed observing the most diversified values of the drag force and that this varies according to the type of section and its respective geometrical dimensions. Therefore, it was possible to observe through the used program the phenomenon described in the bibliography and it was also possible to conclude that the analysis of this type of interaction between flows and obstacles, when done after validation program used, can be made for various scenarios of investigation.

A análise e previsão destes fenómenos é bastante empírica e baseada apenas na literatura e ensaios controlados laboratorialmente a escalas reduzidas.
