Abstract

Introduction: Epilepsy, is a chronic neurological disease, which affects patients both physically and psychosocially. Seizure frequency and duration of the disease together with difficulties presented by individuals with epilepsy have been associated to depressive symptoms, negatively influencing the subjects’ quality of life (QOL). Objectives: To evaluate the existence of depressive symptoms and QOL; to study the relationship between QOL and depressive symptoms; to analyze the relationship between seizure frequency, depressive symptoms and QOL and to examine the relationship between duration of the disease, depressive symptoms and QOL. Methodology: Evaluation of 40 people diagnosed with epilepsy according to the scale of The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D) and the questionnaire Medical Outcomes Short For 36 (SF-36). Results: Eighteen (45%) male and 22 (55%) female patients between 19 and 75 years-old were studied, of which 47.5% had seizures and signs of depressive symptoms and lower QOL. The CES-D score presented a significant correlation with all the dimensions of the SF-36 A meaningful relationship was observed between seizure frequency, depressive symptoms and the QOL. The relationship between duration of disease, depressive symptoms and QOL was not significant. Conclusion: Regardless of the duration of the disease, seizure frequency combined with depressive symptoms has a negative impact on the QOL of with epilepsy.
