Abstract

The present paper describes the methodology used in the development of an index of Lean practices to apply in the process of product development. A literature review is performed in order to characterize the Lean thinking by identifying the aspects considered specific to this philosophy. The strengths and weaknesses are analyzed as well as the most used and referenced tools, in the Lean application. Following the same line of thought, an investigation about the same philosophy was conducted in order to apply in the product development process. Through research, a set of Lean practices featured in the referred process are gathered. Those practices were previously selected and grouped in a specific index to apply in a case study. The selection was based on a component development phase. The proposed index was applied to a component integrated in a system of solar and thermal energy catchment, and it enabled to evaluate and improve its performance; At the same time, the quality was increased by the elimination of activities/information that weren't adding value to its performance. It is concluded that the index developed to the PD process is susceptible of being applied by any organization as a way of increasing the quality of their products.
