Abstract

The study of hydrodynamic drag force (D) that opposes the swimmer’s movement has been included in many studies related to competitive swimming (NPD) in a way to understand the limited factor of D during the swim, which can be determined by two big categories: passive drag (Dp) and active drag (Da). The aim of this study was to assess the effects of 8-weeks of training on Da in young swimmers of both genders. 20 young swimmers, 8 females and 12 males took part of this study. The Da was determined at two different moments: in the beginning of the season and after eight weeks of training. The maximum speed achieved during a 13m swim, the Da and the active drag coefficient (CDa) were determined using a method described by Kolmogorov and Duplishcheva (1992), designated method of small perturbations or the velocity perturbation method, being based on the conservation principle of maximum mechanical propulsive power used by the swimmer. The results indicate that: i) there was an increase in speed among girls and boys, ii) The Da and the CDa decreased among girls and boys, but with no significant difference. It seems that 8 weeks of swimming training were not sufficient to allow significant improvement in swimming technique.
