Frank Capra

Authors: Gonçalves, Débora Monteiro;
Abstract

This dissertation aims to study the life and legacy of Frank Capra. The choice of this particular filmmaker responds to the curiosity of better understanding a reference for many contemporary filmmakers. Therefore, this paper takes as guideline the economic crisis that the “American Classical Cinema” so thoroughly represented, as well as the personal life experiences that Capra used in his films. Additionally, the conclusions will be confronted with modern-day society, suggesting that Capra could have predicted the economic crisis as well as a profound value crisis. On the other hand, Capra’s type-character will also be considered his hero, as it will be argued represents the naïve and kind American, who overlaps good values with cynicism, allowing many people to identify themselves with the protagonists of his films. Thus, Frank Capra can be considered a filmmaker who managed to send his message creatively to his viewers.
