Abstract

Similar to others maturity models, CMMI-DEV is complex to implement, and its certification is also costly, either because of the resource’s allocation required or the costs of the certification itself. Nevertheless, this model meets companies’ needs regarding the quality improvement of the software produced and, consequently, the improvement of the final product itself, through reducing costs, improving organizational agility, among other factors, making a positive contribution to the organization’s continuous improvement. Therefore, this research seeks to analyse the more sensitive factors in organizations that aim to implement CMMI-DEV inherent practices and achieve the respective certification, in the Portuguese context. More precisely, the research aims to answer the following questions: i) What are the most critical factors associated with the implementation of CMMI-DEV inherent practices, and ii) How do these factors strengthen or condition the implementation of CMMI-DEV inherent practices? Evidences show that, in what the CMMI-DEV model concerns, organizations main motivations, when pursuing certification, is to obtain a widely known and recognized quality certificate that can be a differentiating factor when trying to obtain new clients and projects and consequently to increase their market share. Additionally, and concerning the identification of critical factors in the Portuguese context, apart from the those reported in the scientific literature that were confirmed by the interviewees, the research identified other sensitive factors considered relevant for the implementation of CMMI-DEV inherent practices and the certification process. This set of factors was organized into 3 clusters: aspects related to human resources, aspects related to the organization and aspects external to the organization. With the aim of quantifying each factor concerning its relevance, the interviewees rated teams’ willingness to implement CMMI-DEV practices, the organizational support from top management and the certification auditor's experience/knowledge about the business context of the company being audited as the most relevant in each of the dimensions, respectively.
