O objetivo desta dissertação é, por meio de uma monografia, identificar e compilar os principais efeitos associados ao testemunho da violência doméstica no período infantojuvenil. A violência doméstica é um crime de tendência crescente (ainda que as estatísticas sub-representem a realidade atual) e é importante não só reconhecer que as crianças, mesmo não sendo o alvo direto dos insultos e ataques, são afetadas pela prática deste ato criminoso no seu ambiente, mas também especificar as consequências das várias vertentes prejudicadas – anatomia cerebral e dos sistemas nervosos, neurotransmissores, estados psicológico e comportamental e níveis académico, cognitivo e social. Esta revisão é realizada através da consulta de artigos previamente publicados e alguns excertos de livros, nas línguas inglesa e portuguesa, disponibilizados através de bases de dados como PubMed e Google Scholar. Para este efeito, foram excluídas publicações cujo foco se baseava em crianças nas quais as consequências da exposição à violência traduzemse em efeitos físicos e artigos relativos a consequências derivadas da vitimização direta das crianças. Conclui-se que, apesar de não afetar igualmente todas as crianças e do facto dos seus efeitos poderem ser atenuados pelos fatores de proteção apropriados, o testemunho da violência doméstica numa idade precoce é um fator de risco de carga elevada para inúmeras características de potencial nocivo, com efeitos igualmente prejudiciais a curto e longo prazo.

The purpose of this dissertation is, through a monograph, to identify and compile the main effects associated with witnessing domestic violence in infancy and youth. Domestic violence is a crime with a growing trend (even though statistics underrepresent the current reality), and it is important not only to recognize the fact that children, even if they are not the direct target of insults and attacks, are affected by the practice of this criminal act in their environment, but also to specify the consequences of the various impaired aspects: brain’s and nervous systems’ anatomy, neurotransmitters, psychological and behavioral states, and academic, cognitive, and social levels. This review is carried out by consulting previously published articles and some book excerpts, in English and Portuguese, made available through databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar. For this purpose, publications whose focus was on children in which the consequences of exposure to violence translate into physical effects and articles concerning consequences derived from the direct victimization of children were excluded. It is reached the conclusion that, even though it does not affect all children equally and its effects can be mitigated by appropriate protective factors, witnessing domestic violence at an early age is a highly charged risk factor for numerous potentially harmful characteristics, with equally harmful effects in the short and long term.
